I had Bob Lucas come this past fall to do his Scholarly Writing Workshop
for our faculty, and I would call it a great success. He was expensive
but he gave some very helpful advice and practical tips in an amusing,
memorable way. Our faculty responded most positively, and the
evaluations all gave the workshop extremely high marks. As a follow-up,
we are establishing a "Writer's Encouragement Group" on our campus. The
first meeting is tomorrow where we will sit over a brown bag lunch and
decide how we can support and encourage each other in writing--reading
drafts for each other, checking up on progress, etc. I will participate
with faculty since I do a lot of proposal writing. I've had many
positive comments from faculty since the workshop, but one that sums it
all up is from a faculty member who wrote into her recent sabbatical
application that the workshop was a "life-changing experience" which
made her see that she had to change her approach to writing. Since the
seminar in November, she has kept writing and can now see that her book
which she has been working on for years can be finished within the
foreseeable future. So I'd recommend Bob, obviously!
