SUMMARY: FastLane PIN security
Farnsworth, Franci 15 Feb 2000 14:11 EST
As promised, here's a summary of the replies received last week concerning
maintaining a list of FastLane PINs. There were 39 responses: 30
maintain a list, 8 do not, 1 assigns PIN's that are part of the university
ID (and so can be looked up). The main reasons for maintaining a PIN list:
PI's forget, facilitates SRO going into proposal as PI for technical
assistance or to assist with editing. Those not maintaining a list cite
security concerns, the ease of assigning new PIN's, ability of PI's to
assign proposal PIN's, and new feature allowing PI's to assign SRO access.
A number of institutions in both categories allow PI's to choose their own
PINs.
