The University of Southern Maine has no formal written policy on
what is allowable effort for a faculty member beyond their base load
during the academic year. Generally, the base load is defined as:
3 25% course blocks/semester, and
1 25% block for research/public service/administrative duties.
When a faculty member works on a research/funded project most
often the unfunded or cost shared effort is a part of the last 25%
block.
However, there are instances where allowable additional effort is
expended. In those cases, subject to sponsor limitations and
approval of their dean, faculty may earn up to an additional 20% of
their base pay during the academic year, the equivalent of one
day/week. This is merely a guide-line here, although it is perceived
to be reasonable in most cases.
I would be interested in getting some feedback about what your
policy is, how reasonable the perception is of it at your institution,
and how you determine to what extent any research effort is within
(or without) of the base load effort.
Thanks.
