To calculate the unobligated balance, you would look at the remaining balance (total funding) and subtract any funding “obligated” to subawards (the total amount listed in the subaward that remains unspent/un-paid to the sub site). This would equal your total unobligated balance. This is then divided by the total award amount to give you the percentage remaining. If it is over the 25%, you will need to provide justification with detail on how your site plans to get spending back on track, and a request to retain the unobligated funds (carry them forward) into the next budget period. Hope this helps!

Subject: [RESADM-L] NIH Multi-Year Funded Award - Unobligated Balance on RPPR

Hello All.

I am working on an RPPR for a multi-year funded (MYF) award. The funding was all awarded in the Year 1 NOA and the RPPR is due just before the start of Year 2.

How should I calculate the unobligated balance being reported in the MYF RPPR?

If I use the current ubobligated balance as a percentage of the funds awarded in Year 1, we are going to be over the 25% threshold.

Thank you in advance.

Catherine
