At OU, we do.  Physicians at our affiliated hospital all receive courtesy (unpaid) appointments at the OU medical school and have some faculty-level privileges.  Applying for grants would be one of those privileges, but we restrict it to those times when the hospital is not an eligible applicant.

Does it work well?  Not particularly, but there are so few that we can keep an eye on them pretty well.  One thing to watch for in these days of corporate hospital purchases is that the "new" hospital may well spin off whole medical units to other for-profit entities.  If one of your funded PIs is in one of those units, they lose the hospital appointment that gave them the university courtesy appointment.  Now, you have an ineligible PI.  It's not a huge big deal to appoint a new PI, but you have to know that it's happened.

Good Afternoon,

I was curious if any universities with medical schools have policies/procedures that enable physicians with unpaid faculty appointments to serve as PIs on externally funded projects on behalf of the University?

We have affiliation agreements with a couple external partners in which faculty/physicians are given split appointments between a hospital and the university and the university then serves as the research arm; those individuals have paid university appointments.  In this case, any of the physicians/faculty are free to submit grants through the university as PIs.

We are now being asked by an external partner to provide be provided that same benefit (submit grants through CMU) without the split appointment arrangement.   In other words, there is no compensation arrangement with the university and the physician.  We have several questions and do not have direct experience with such an affiliation.  I was curious if there are any universities out there that may have a similar agreement with an external partner; if so, are there any policies/procedures you would be willing to share with us?

Kindly,

Mel
