Hi Thomas,
So in your scenario, and I'm going to assume that you are looking at a 12 month faculty and that the assignment is for a full 12 months, the math would be = .3 * [salary rate cap]/actual salary rate = % charged to grant; and then 30 - [% charged to grant] = % charged to discretionary.

If you needed to do the allocation for only a portion of the year, over say only a 7 month period, the math would be = .3 * [salary rate cap/12*7]/(actual salary/12*7) = % charged to grant; 30% - [% to grant] = % to discretionary
