Yes, I would. It could be construed as a conflict of interest if his project is in any way connected, and only the COI committee be that the university should be the judge of this based on the abstract/SOW. Make sure he reports this as 'in-kind' on his Other Support documents as well.

Our form for researchers to declare significant financial interests for NIH applications has the usual questions that asks about remuneration from a publicly traded entity / non-publily traded entity. We use the definition of remuneration from Uniform Guidance - salary and any payment for services not otherwise identified as salary (e.g., consulting fees, honoraria, paid authorship). I have a researcher who has received funds from a company for his research that weren’t awarded as part of a competitive grant process, i.e., they have just given him this money to spend on his research in any way he wants. How do you handle this? Do you consider it remuneration?
