Hi Karen,

Our 9-month faculty are not on payroll during the summer, so if they have summer effort and are subject to the NIH salary cap, our department requires that they have discretionary funds to cover the difference between the cap and their salary.

Usually here the department covers the salary over the cap for any employee over the cap no matter the appointment.

Greetings,

I am looking for information on how your institution handles 9-month contracts and summer salary with respect to the NIH salary cap.

Do you expect your faculty to essentially take a pay cut during the summer and only receive the cap amount?

Or, does the institution commit funds (not sponsored funds) to make up the difference between the cap and the institutional base salary?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Best,

Karen
