Hi, Lori.

Carnegie Mellon does not typically permit a researcher to be PI (or provide effort at all) on both sides of an STTR.  We generally consider that to be an unmanageable conflict.  They must choose one side or the other, though which side they choose can vary from award to award.

To get ahead of your faculty member: the next question we hear is usually "Then can I be the company PI and have someone who works for me be the university PI?"  That's typically still a no for us; if the researcher has chosen the company side we want the university side to be run by someone who is independent of the conflicted researcher.  That's usually a different faculty member in a different lab.

We can always consider making an exception to our standard practices with justification of an exceptional need, but I'm not sure what it would take for us to approve this arrangement.  The bar would be quite high.

Hello Research Administration Think Tank,

I have a question regarding a NASA STTR submission. The guidelines state that the PI of the award can either be from the SBC or the research institution; however, it does not mention anything about being the PI at the SBC AND the PI at the research institute at the same time. We have a faculty member inquiring if this can be done.

I am curious if any of you have had this situation and if so, how did you manage it? Was it allowable? Thanks so much for your help!

Have a great day,
Lori
