The DCA offices have been negotiating fridge rates for 50 years. A fridge rate should not be confused with the fringe distribution rate within the institution itself. They are very different rates. The fringe rate that’s negotiated with the federal government normally is higher because it’s a smaller base and there are items added to a fringe rate that you do not take into consideration for distribution purposes amongst the financials of the University.

Interesting.  I came from an R01 institution and I don't recall fringe being part of it, but could just be forgetting.

hi Jenny,
Many large, R01 institutions have not just F&A rate/s, but also fringe rates that are negotiated.
We have 5 different categories of personnel & F&A rates.

I have not heard of federally negotiated fringe rate?  When I was at the university we had various fringe rates based on job code like staff, Professor, grad student, temp, etc.  I've also seen institutions that take an average fringe rate and use that to keep it more simple, but it was not federally negotiated, only the indirects were.

Hi all,

Does anyone have a federally negotiated fringe rate that you use for federal grants and a higher institutional fringe rate that you use for everything else? If so, are you willing to speak with a university client of mine who is exploring this option (or put us in touch with your finance people in charge of fringe rates)?

Thank you,
