Thank you for the response below. To clarify I was not intending ‘burden’ to be linked with the work of the administrators in this field. When I use that term here I mean additional burden that comes from requirements for duplicative actions
(like current and pending support submitted twice) or new regulations/laws that increased the work necessary to accept manage sponsored project funding.

Wishing you the very best in your defense today! However, and I hope I don't sound mean-spirited, it makes me sad that people still use the word "burden" in connection with administrative staff.
This is something that we have battled for several years in my place of work as it has been generally used in a pejorative way and is very demoralizing to hear.

As coincidence would have it, I am defending my dissertation tomorrow and it is focused on administrative burden in federal research grant management from the point of view of research administrators. Have any of you found a good educational or scholarly article, journal posting, or other resource that looks at the increase in administrative burden in managing federal financial assistance funding for a certain period of time? I am trying to compile a staffing plan and need some metrics or article data/references to substantiate my position on the increase in administrative burden as it relates to ‘more touches’, an increase in monitoring needs, and an increase in coordination with other compliance units due to the breadth of new(er) regulations from our sponsors.
