I would also add that it would depend on your institution’s policies. Would they pay for the extra hotel days? Did the PI follow the institution’s policy on booking travel during the pandemic?

CAUTION - EXTERNAL EMAIL

Teri,

As usual, the answer is, “It depends.”

If the sole purpose of the trip was for the PI to attend the conference and the PI had no control or choice over being quarantined then I’d say that the extra expense is part of the cost of doing business during a pandemic.

However, this is a question/request for the funding agency’s program officer to answer, and then to approve or deny. I think that you have a justifiable case.

Good luck,

Subject: [RESADM-L] Hypothetical Question

Good afternoon,

Someone asked me this question and I am writing to seek opinions.  On federal dollars, a PI traveled to a conference out of the country.  They ended up quarantine there due to COVID.   Can they charge the extra days of the hotel bill to the federal grant?  My gut is no as that has nothing to do with  completing the objectives of the grant proposal.  Just curious to what others think.

Thanks!

Teri
