In another life, university technology transfer was my occupation and my passion. I was lucky enough to be hired by Mel DeGeeter when he created the Office of Technology Transfer (TTO) at IU.
University TTO(s) and their economic development offices, all over the nation, owe their existence to Senator Birch Bayh’s (my Indiana hero) and Senator Bob Dole’s leadership. Of course they had their army of passionate university attorneys and research professionals applying pressure and doing the heavy lifting. This effort resulted in the expansion of a professional organization, Society of University Patent Administrators (SUPA) that morphed into the current Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM).
The Bayh Dole Act of 1980 was a paradigm shift for entrepreneurship. University ownership of intellectual property was economically transformational and allowed our institutions to build on their research portfolios to include licensing and economic development resulting in a new source of research related funding, jobs, start-up businesses and medical innovations that continue to improve our quality of life.
Take a moment and thank Senator Dole and Senator Bayh and those that spearheaded this legislation. It is a testament to what we can do when we work together to improve lives.
Here is a link to the AUTM website that commemorates Senator Dole. (Just in case my pdf doesn’t go through) https://autm.net/AUTM/media/About-AUTM/Documents/2021-12-05-Bob-Dole.pdf
Thank you for indulging me. If I didn’t get the history correct or left someone out, I apologize and would welcome corrections and additional kudos to the contribution of others.
