We do the same...treat it as a supply and confirm by email that the computer will be used for the grant only. This is also captured in the budget justification where it's explained why a particular computer is needed for the grant.  I was recently asked, however, by our technology services and a faculty member to begin charging the grants a $2000 technology fee for new employees who are listed as personnel on grants. Has anyone else had that?  Long story short, I told them we weren't doing that.

I do though have the PI, confirm that the computer/laptop will be used solely for the project.

Subject: [RESADM-L] computers

Hi all,

I’m curious as to how other places are handling computer requests on grants. As most these days are less than $5000, are you still considering them equipment or a supply?  What kind of documentation are you requiring allowing a computer on a NIH grant and post-award for monitoring?

Thanks

Matt
