Hi Erica,

I went to Temple for undergrad and had no idea what I was going to do, but I knew that I was a decent writer, and I loved literature. The degree has served me well throughout my professional career.  Interestingly, though, I developed a love for science and animals after undergrad so I did a post-bacc at UPenn in biology that was supposed to lead to vet school, but I opted to stay on the research track at Penn's Vet School. I worked as a research coordinator for several studies and projects, but by far my favorite was a longitudinal study of the health impacts on search and rescue dogs that deployed to the 9/11 disasters in 2001.  All of the research with which I was involved was grant-funded, so I was working on grants long before I ended up as the director of sponsored programs at an IHE!  I ended up moving from Philly to northeastern PA (where I grew up) after my children were born, and from there I wound my way from an epi and oncology research job in a health system, to clinical trials software and then back to a university with my current role.  I also completed a Master's in Higher Ed a couple of years ago.

I realize you only asked why English, but I enjoyed reading how everyone else found their way into RA and thought I'd share.  It seems like the liberal arts have been hammered in recent years as a waste of time and money in college, yet I feel like we're seeing a simultaneous and not-so-coincidental decrease in people's ability to think critically and communicate professionally.  I think our profession demands these skills, and here we are in a listserv humbly asking the tough questions that require critical thinking.  Funny how it all works out!

I had a very positive experience by hiring an intern who was a junior (English major) at the time he began with our department.  He worked as an intern for one semester and then stayed on as a work study student for his senior year.  We were able to hire him part-time after graduation and then full-time a year later.  He's been with us since, and he's fantastic.  It was an ideal opportunity to train someone from the ground up.  I have always felt that teaching/training are great learning experiences for the teacher/trainer, too.

Best,

Amanda

I’d like to expand the discussion on this.  I have some individuals coming out of college (Bachelor’s) who I am encouraging to look at positions in research administration; however, many of the positions are requiring a minimum number of years of experience in the field.  Are institutions offering truly entry level research admin positions and if so, how are you qualifying your experience requirements for these types of positions?  If we are offering training for this type of position in the field, are you able to direct them to how to enter the field?  More of a curiosity but also hoping to lead more individuals to this great profession!

Cristina –

I have not seen any developed material designed for prospective professionals interested in beginning a career in research administration.  Your student has accurately identified a gap that our profession has not done a very good job of filling yet.  Sometime in the coming months I’m planning a presentation for my institution designed to guide non-research admins in entry-level positions to our profession, but that is probably not helpful for your student at the moment.

This topic is high on my professional priority list, so please share any materials you discover on this topic with the listserv.  Best of luck!

Hello! I am currently teaching a course about Research Management and Administration at NOVA University Lisbon targeted to the bachelor students. This is a new educational offer in Portugal and it is been developed in the frame of the ERASMUS+ funded project foRMAtion - https://www.formation-rma.eu/.

One of my students wants to create promotional materials for students to raise awareness about the profession (as she feels that it could be a great job opportunity, but totally unknown by the students). As far as I know, there is not particular promotional material (such as videos, social media channels, leaflets,...) for this target audience, since most of the materials are for the ones already in the profession. But, does anyone know any material about RMA for students?

Thank you in advance,

Cristina Oliveira - NOVA Lisbon University
