My background is in allied health. I have a MS in Physical Therapy and just like most of us “happened upon” research administration, when I was hired as an AA temp by  senior PI with a lab of 40. Submitted my first NIH grant 3 weeks in! The PI hired me full time 2 weeks later. Since then, I worked in basic research at hospital and university settings, did a “stint” as an grant officer for several years in central admin,  and now I’m working with sponsored clinical trials.

I started my Masters in RA a year and a half after I started in research admin and it was immensely helpful to make the next steps.

I feel that it is hard to spread the word about a great field that is not very known or advertised, offers you longevity and career options for decades.

I’s so happy to applied to that temp job many years ago!  J

I wanted to chime in and share my story because this is such a great thread.  I have a dual BA degree in English and Art History and “fell” into research administration after various positions in secondary and higher education. I was unaware of the field until I became the IRB administrator at a small institution.  One of my colleagues had retired from Cornell and worked part-time as a Post-Award Coordinator.  She was the first to mention “research administration” as a career.

Fondly, she reflected on her days as a Senior Grants and Contracts Officer and shared so many interesting experiences.  Ultimately, she was my first mentor.  Fast forward, I am now the mentor! Recently, I had a younger colleague pursue a career in research administration.  She starts her new role soon!  What convinced her…all the mobility in our field!  She can find a job anywhere!  I am excited to continue mentoring her!

This is truly an exciting niche career with endless possibilities!

This is really interesting!  I like that folks get to sit/be trained with other aspects of research administration.

Chutes & Ladder career over here. A little bit of everything, most recently non profit management. I WISH there had been a training program because as a newbie, newbie, I would have loved to go through something like that. 😊

Dear Erica,

English majors are awesome!  They are writers, critical thinkers, able to review complex and theoretical work and make sense of it, and are adaptable.  (Please note that my comments aren’t meant to take anything away from students pursuing other academic programs and careers, as they all deserve support and encouragement.)

My previous sponsored research division routinely offered graduate research assistantships to two students each year – we recruited doctoral candidates in English and Clinical Psychology.  Students from both programs were very successful in grant development and research administration.

So, why not English?

I had a very positive experience by hiring an intern who was a junior (English major) at the time he began with our department.  He worked as an intern for one semester and then stayed on as a work study student for his senior year.  We were able to hire him part-time after graduation and then full-time a year later.  He's been with us since, and he's fantastic.  It was an ideal opportunity to train someone from the ground up.  I have always felt that teaching/training are great learning experiences for the teacher/trainer, too.

Best,

Amanda

I’d like to expand the discussion on this.  I have some individuals coming out of college (Bachelor’s) who I am encouraging to look at positions in research administration; however, many of the positions are requiring a minimum number of years of experience in the field.  Are institutions offering truly entry level research admin positions and if so, how are you qualifying your experience requirements for these types of positions?  If we are offering training for this type of position in the field, are you able to direct them to how to enter the field?  More of a curiosity but also hoping to lead more individuals to this great profession!

Cristina –

I have not seen any developed material designed for prospective professionals interested in beginning a career in research administration.  Your student has accurately identified a gap that our profession has not done a very good job of filling yet.  Sometime in the coming months I’m planning a presentation for my institution designed to guide non-research admins in entry-level positions to our profession, but that is probably not helpful for your student at the moment.

This topic is high on my professional priority list, so please share any materials you discover on this topic with the listserv.  Best of luck!

Hello! I am currently teaching a course about Research Management and Administration at NOVA University Lisbon targeted to the bachelor students. This is a new educational offer in Portugal and it is been developed in the frame of the ERASMUS+ funded project foRMAtion - https://www.formation-rma.eu/.

One of my students wants to create promotional materials for students to raise awareness about the profession (as she feels that it could be a great job opportunity, but totally unknown by the students). As far as I know, there is not particular promotional material (such as videos, social media channels, leaflets,...) for this target audience, since most of the materials are for the ones already in the profession. But, does anyone know any material about RMA for students?

Thank you in advance,

Cristina Oliveira - NOVA Lisbon University
