Subject: [External] Re: [RESADM-L] Anyone noticing a significant decrease in proposal submissions?

We have had a 25% increase in proposal submissions since March as compared to last year is the last I heard from our central office.  In my department alone, proposal submissions have increased significantly.

Off the initial question but related to the topic of dealing with a significantly increased workload;

Not complaining about the increase as I’m all too aware of many without work right now, and proposals (and resulting awards) are the ‘bread and butter’.  My days are mixed with a combo of feeling both overwhelmed and experiencing overwhelming gratitude for the job.  I get a sense from our faculty that they too are experiencing these kinds of mixed emotions, coupled with an increased workload including switching quickly to online teaching formats, etc. right now.

I read a recent article somewhere that spoke of the working from home switch, and a correlation with an increase of the accumulation of vacation time as people are working so much.

I have had several instances of planning days off and then not being able to use the time due to the continued influx of proposals.  I work with a fantastic and supportive team and we all share in the workload love and still this is how it is right now and we are coping as best as we can.  Time off and staying on top of it all has just not been possible, so the only choice of course is to stay on top of the workload.

Again, grateful to have this kind of a ‘problem’, but it makes me thing about how others are maintaining a healthy work/life balance while working from home (or at the office if that is the case)?

Some things I have tried, but would love to hear other ideas;

  1. Getting up and taking a walk if I don’t forget and work right through lunch.
  2. Creating a separate workspace in my home to separate work from home life.  This only works if one actually leaves the separate home workspace once in a while.  😉

Any advice from this group would be much appreciated!

Thank you,

Same here. I have been working from home since March and I have been going nonstop.  Looking back at my logs, I have sent more proposals through this year than last.

If you are planning to submit a proposal, CHS-SPO will continue to submit proposals while working remotely.  All new grant applications should go through the usual internal review process including routing through RAMS-SPOT.  Sponsors and federal agencies are aware of the current challenges and we will share additional guidance as it becomes available.

Please continue to send your post-award questions and requests to <xxxxxx@vcu.edu> so that CHS-SPO can continue to support your grants management activities.

Notify the CHS Sponsored Programs Office of your intent to submit a proposal using our new online form.

Good morning.

I’ve been asked if our institution is experiencing a dip in proposal submissions. As far as I can tell, we are not. In March, April and May of 2020 we were lower than previous years, but then in June we saw twice as many submissions as we had in the previous two years. This could be attributed to moving off campus in the early Spring and our office catching up on data entry by June. So far, July, August and September have not been much different than previous years.

What are the rest of you experiencing?

Thanks in advance and stay well!

Tom
