A Commons ID is not required for named individuals unless they have one of the following roles:
In most cases, co-investigators do not have to have a Commons ID, but it's certainly common practice to include them when available.

Above requirements cited per https://grants.nih.gov/grants/how-to-apply-application-guide/prepare-to-apply-and-register/registration/investigators-and-other-users/era-commons-user-registration.htm.

Hope this helps!

Hi Sam,

My thoughts are for the quickest solution is get your institutional to set up a new eRA Commons account with Principal Investigator ID (this will have no effect on you listing her as a Co-I in your proposal). They should be able to do this since the account would be using a different email address than in the Commons system now. Also, they should create a different Common User ID. Then she should be able to delete her old Commons account as the account holder or at least deactivate it.

Hope this helps!

Jo

Currently, NIH does require Co-Investigators to have an eRA Commons account.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [RESADM-L] Commons ID - Co-Investigator

Hi all,

Quick question, we have a proposal going in with 2 PD/PIs and about 9 Co-Investigators. They are all listed on the Key Personnel form. One of my Co-Investigators has a Commons ID, but it is linked to her old work place, and they have her role in their eRA Commons as Reviewer, no PI. So when I put her in as a Co-I, I get a warning in Grants.gov.

Her new workplace is working on creating an eRA Commons account to link her account to them, but they have to set up with SAM first and that’s a bit time intensive, so it won’t be completed by the time we submit.

Should I a) leave her Commons ID in the proposal, regardless of the warning or b) remove it per guidance that says, “If you have an established eRA Commons personal profile, enter the senior/key person's username. If you do not have an eRA Commons personal profile, skip the "Credential" field.” It’s not clear to me if this applies to Co-I’s or not, so I’m hesitant to remove it.

I haven’t been in this situation before, and I don’t want the application to get kicked back for a “bad” commons ID nor because we didn’t fill in the Credential field.

Thank you,

Sam
