Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The College of Information Studies (iSchool) is recruiting two Business Managers who will be responsible for the management of all pre- and post-award processes for the iSchool faculty assigned to the Business Manager’s portfolio. This individual will be responsible for managing the financial aspects of research, startup, and retention accounts, ensuring that resources are well managed, accurately reported and comply with federal and state regulations as well as University of Maryland policies and procedures. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, preparing budgets and providing support for proposal submissions; approving and processing day-to-day transactions and inquiries in accordance with applicable regulations for purchasing, travel, payroll, and sub-awards; completing monthly account reconciliations; providing faculty and researchers with accurate account reports and forecasts; monitoring effort compliance and salary support for personnel; completing award close-out procedures; providing advice and guidance in accordance with sponsor and University policies and procedures; and identifying issues of concern and providing solutions.
This position must adhere to University financial management standards, general management and accounting principles, practices, methods, and techniques. A successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to apply various policies and procedures in real-world situations. In addition, a successful candidate must be enthusiastic, positive, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and have a demonstrable ability to take initiative. Excellent communication and customer-oriented skills, since the Business Manager will be required to regularly meet with faculty to review awards and their funding situations.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree with a preferred concentration in business, accounting or financial management, or the equivalent of education and experience.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience managing pre- and post-award activities on sponsored research contracts and grants, preferably in an institution of higher
education. Including proposal preparation and account reconciliations.
• Thorough understanding of federal grant regulations such as the OMB Circulars and Uniform Guidance with the ability to apply that knowledge to job duties. Familiarity with electronic proposal submission programs such as Workspace, Fastlane, and eRA Commons.
• Strong computer proficiency using MS Office with an emphasis on Excel, including spreadsheet creation and report production.
• Must be self-motivated and detail oriented with the ability to perform duties under limited supervision.
• Must have demonstrated organizational, analytical and problem solving abilities with strong mathematical skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, share information, and work collaboratively.
• Ability to take initiative, analyze problems, prepare and articulate solutions.
• Dedication to providing excellent service to internal and external customers.

Preferences:

• Experience with the University of Maryland software programs (such as Kuali Financial System, Kuali Research, PHR, and ELF).
• Advanced Microsoft Office skills

Physical Demands

This position requires spending long hours sitting and using computers. Light lifting of materials and supplies: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to communicate by talking, hearing, and seeing. The employee must have the ability to work and attend meetings and trainings in multiple locations on campus.
