Job Description
The Director of Operations and Administration will advance the mission of the Syracuse University BioInspired Institute, by working with institute leadership and faculty members in multiple Syracuse University units on strategic planning, institute programming,
high-level financial planning, grant proposal organization, and institute publicity. This position reports to the director of the BioInspired Institute and provides high level administrative support to the director, associate director, and the executive committee
while supporting faculty researchers and students through the organization of institute activities, coordination of grant proposals, and strategic planning. The director of operations and administration will play a key role in the BioInspired Institute by
facilitating coordination with offices in multiple colleges, departments, and administrative units.
Qualifications
• A master’s or PhD degree with at least 4 years of professional experience in administration and operations in a large organization, preferably in a research and development environment, or a bachelor’s degree with 8 or more years of experience.
• Documented management training, such as project management certification or a related degree, would be highly valued.
• Expertise in developing and managing budgets is desirable.
Job Specific Qualifications
• Superior written and oral communication skills are required.
• Experience in preparing content for diverse audiences is highly desirable.
• The demonstrated ability to collaboratively work with a broad variety of people, such as the faculty, staff, and students in the institute, to solve complex challenges is required.
• Advanced facility with MS Office suite, especially MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Responsibilities
• Manages the organization of internal and external grant proposals for development by institute members and university grants staff, especially for large grant applications. Provides institute information to grant writers. Monitors proposal initiation and
development, proposal submission, awards, and reporting by investigators on institute grants.
• Publicizes the activities of the institute. Maintains and publicizes the institute’s calendar. Acts as liaison to web page developers and marketing and communications experts, in support of institute visibility and publicity.
• Documents institute activities. Collects data and qualitative information about institute membership and activities. Prepares reports on the institute for members and for external reviewers.
• Strongly supports the director and executive board on strategic planning to advance the institute’s mission. Acts as primary recorder and maintainer of the detailed strategic plan. Tracks achievement of milestones by the institute and member faculty and informs director and
executive board of status of strategic goals.
• Directs the programming of the institute, including events such as prominent speakers, workshops, and board (executive, review) meetings and also regular institute meetings (seminars, graduate and junior researcher training). Manages interactions, internal
and external, for the institute, including faculty/student/inter-collegiate/industry programming. Acts as administrative host for visitors and event coordinator.
