Hi Everyone,
New to the group and discussion, but it’s nice to see a familiar face – hi Zoya!
Here at UML we have engaged our faculty in a self-serve funding search model; we have conducted trainings on how to use a database called Dimensions
https://www.dimensions.ai/. UML has a subscription, which we link to from our website, this allows faculty to access the basic search functions, and save searches. I have personally been part of the team that conducts
the training and most faculty have been excited to learn about this tool. I have attached an article on a Dimensions case study which included participation from our Vice Chancellor for Research Administration and Institutional Compliance, Anne Maglia.
Dimensions does not offer current funding opportunities, but it allows faculty to see who is funding their research (both federal and nonfederal sponsors), potential collaborators,
and publications for previous research in the area. Dimensions has so much information, it is a good investment of a researchers time to do some searching.
We are also in the situation like many institutions, not enough resources to allow for individually focused searchers. We will be interested to see over time how many faculty use
Dimensions and what their feedback is.
Best,
Brandi

Interesting discussion on this listserv…are you on it?

Two cents from my experience. Distributing opportunities to staff is one of the areas that really hasn’t been looked at in great enough detail. There are a wide range of methods to distribute these opportunities but measuring their success
is a real struggle.
This is an area I believe most research administrators care a great deal about but unfortunately investigator relationships is something most institutions do not provide enough time to engage in to the level they would like. I can’t tell
you how many times I’ve heard over the years that this is an area most wish they could spend much more time on.
Opprtunity systems like Spin/Pivot/etc. are helpful tools but to get them “right” takes a lot of effort which commonly requires research administrators to work closely with investigators to complete their profiles so often they’re not delivering
on the promise of putting the right opportunities in front of them. Worse yet if they’re not set up properly they inundate investigators with opportunities they’re not interested in and in some cases they start to ignore the results entirely. The same can
be true for other methods of distribution like lists, newsletters, and emails. If they feel it’s just more work to review results that arent’ meaningful, they’ll ignore them or worse yet set up a rule so they’re not seen at all.
It’s realy hard to find the right balance. I don’t have a solution, just thoughts which I share in hopes it might make some feel a little better that they are not alone.
At some point hopefully someone will improve an electronic system allowing users to thumbs up/thumbs down results so it can learn to provide more relevant results (like Pandora) so it will learn what the investigator are looking for.

Hi Courtney,
We did a survey of this listserv in 2015 about this very topic. Granted, things might have changed since but I thought it may be useful to you. The results are published in the SRA Catalyst here:

Subject: [RESADM-L] Distributing Funding Opportunities to Faculty
Hello,
Our college is going to be implementing a process soon to distribute funding opportunities to faculty members based on his or her expertise and research interests. We are currently in the planning stages of how we would like to tackle this
and have a few ideas in mind, however, I am wondering if your institution sends opportunities to your faculty members and what method(s) is/are used. For example, do you use a newsletter, listserv, etc.? Is it effective and do you track metrics? The college
I am working in has over 400 faculty members so we are trying to find the most timely and effective processes.
Any information you can share is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
