Full disclosure, I have never used either Banner or Workday as part of my daily activities. I have used other ERP systems a great deal and have a lot of familiarity with those who do use these systems.
The benefits are fairly clear. If you do NOT have a research system (eRA) you can get a great deal out of both these systems in terms of tracking and often reporting which should not be under appreciated. Custom fields can be added to enhance these tracking and reporting capabilities as well.
The down side is that they are not truly designed for this purpose so it is a bit of a square peg round hole situation. Workflow, one of the greatest features of eRA systems is often not possible or cumbersome with other systems and system to system is not something they support.
If you don’t have or cannot buy an eRA system I would highly recommend using your ERP system to its greatest ability. It will not enhance productivity to the same extent but you can accomplish a great deal. If you need to, or feel you should, make a case for eRA I’d recommend you pursue that rigorously.
