NRT applicants and recipients:
We are in the midst of budgeting for the upcoming NRT deadline, and I have a question regarding length of support required for NSF trainees.
In reading the 19-522 guidelines regarding support (page 10), it states:
NSF-funded trainees should receive 12 continuous months of stipend support over an annual period, unless they are allowed an interruption to pursue a funded, career-enhancing
research opportunity (e.g. internsip). If an interruption is approved, then the student must received the balance of their 12 month support, over a comparable time interval, immediately upon conclusion of the approved, funded interruption.
Do you read this NSF requirement to be
a minimum of 12 months of NRT support or increments of 12 months of NSF support? If we were to include an external paid internship in the summer of Year 2 as part of the student’s training plan, would that be the terminus of the NRT funding (a
total of 20 months of support)? Or is there an expectation the student will be funded for the remaining 4 months after the internship (a total of 24 months)?
We have posed this question to the NSF directly, but unfortunately with their closure they can’t respond and the deadline is fast approaching. If you could let me know how
you are either supporting your current NSF NRT trainees or your experience in budgeting in prior submissions, it would be greatly appreciated!
