Hi Jessica,

I wonder if part of this expense could be considered an off-site rental of a temporary research office, separated out from the travel cost of transportation and the projected cost of lodging in the area (replaced by the RV accommodation).

In previous PAPPGs, NSF specified the allowability of “rental or lease of facilities” as a form of other direct costs. This would require justification of the temporary research office, to be used wholly by the project and for research needs. If that’s a possible solution, I recommend running it by the program officer to make sure it makes sense to NSF in this case.

Best,

Kelly

Hello All,

I have an odd lodging situation.

I have a data collector traveling on an NSF grant to Burning Man.  They have requested to stay in an RV because they could not stay in the “group camp.”  The RV would replace the cost of a bus to get out to the festival location, but is still about $1,500 for three days.

I believe that  given the remote location and festival/event happening, the cost of the RV would be allowable even if over lodging per diem.  I was wondering if anyone had some experience with this, or could throw out what kind of required documentation you would ask for.

Thank you,

Jessica
