We have a faculty member funded by NIH and I learned today that he is slated to receive overload compensation for work on an executive committee. I nearly fell over when I learned this and immediately put a halt to it so I could check it out. He will receive $2000 for each of the fall and spring semesters for work that is “above and beyond normal Faculty services and not a part of normal workload.”

Would you consider this incidental? We don’t have a definition of incidental, by the way, and the payment is on a faculty contract addendum temporary overload form.

This has nothing to do with his grant and I am wondering whether we have to include this as part of his time and effort (which would mean we would need to include this in his IBS).

Any advice?

Carolyn
