So, the time away from the project is going to exceed the 3 months, or a 25% reduction in time, that constitutes PI Disengagement per Uniform Guidance?  If not…. Breathe easy.  But it sounds like this situation is more serious than that.  You do need prior approval from the sponsor if the disengagement rises to these levels.  You might be able to switch in a different PI, either permanently or for a time, if the work is time-sensitive.  Is there a Co-PI?

Hi all,

Hoping those with mucho experience can help with a tricky situation. What would you do and what considerations would you have with the following situation:

Employee goes overseas to work on a federal grant activity

Employee  becomes medically incapable of continuing at least in the short term.

It's advisable that employee comes home, but then would not be able to continue the grant work.
