<br> ==============================Good morning, Diane—
The cap refers to the individual’s institutional base salary, pro-rated to the equivalent of a 12-month appointment. So if the 12-month cap is $187,000, the cap for a 9-month appointment is 75% of that, or $140,250. Since the individual in your example makes more than that amount, s/he would already be above the cap.
That does not mean, however, that your investigator can’t be paid summer salary on an NIH grant. It just means that NIH will only pay at the rate of $140,250 divided by the 9-month appointment, or $15,583/month. Any compensation above that rate would have to be paid out of non-federal funding. See last year’s Guide Notice for a fuller explanation, with examples.

Subject: [RESADM-L] NIH Salary Cap
Good morning,
I would appreciate a clearer understanding of the NIH Salary Cap. It is currently $187,000 for a twelve month appointment which equates to: $15,583 per month.My PI is on a nine month appointment and earns $145,500/year which equates to: $16,167 per month. If this person only receives one month of summer salary are they still considered over the cap. Their yearly salary would not be over $187,000 only their monthly salary.
Guidance on how this is calculated is appreciated and how does your institution make up the difference?
Regards,
Diane Mason
