I would not think of this as the preferable route to the desired outcome. By comparison, we have had NIH administratively withdraw a (later-submitted) application
of our PI’s once they determined they were going to fund an (earlier submitted) application. We didn’t have to do anything. They made the award and withdrew the second pending application for us. Asking you to withdraw prior to award seems unnecessarily
risky.

Subject: [RESADM-L] withdrawing a new proposal (R15) before reviewed one actually awarded
Good morning. We have a PI whose R15, submitted in February, reviewed extremely well and whose PO is “adamant” that it will be funded. That’s great and we are delighted for the
PI. The wrinkle is that he submitted a new R15 proposal in the June cycle and has been advised by the PO to withdraw the pending proposal – “clear house and remove conflicting grant applications from the review queue.”
The PI is okay with this. We are reluctant to withdraw the proposal without official notification. Should we be worried or can we go ahead and withdraw? Would you recommend our
office contacting the PO for confirmation, or would that sound like second guessing him? Naturally, we don’t want to irk the PO.
Any advice would be appreciated as this is new territory for us.
