I can't remember if it was this group or CLASP that recently had a discussion about how student researchers are paid. I have been looking at this more deeply lately because our UR and HR offices wanted to go to all internship stipend payments. However, as I dig deeper, it doesn't seem this is allowable unless the grant is a training grant or training is defined in the Scope of Work and is approved by the Agency. So any other grant, student researchers must be paid as employees.

1. Is that the correct interpretation?
2. Can they still be paid as student workers (which does not include benefits)? Or must they be paid as regular non-student employees with all of the benefits that come with that?
