The position description follows:
The Office of Sponsored Programs Administration (OSPA) acts as Iowa State University's (ISU) institutional office responsible for reviewing, endorsing, and submitting
proposals to extramural sponsors for research, training, instructional and other activities. OSPA is also responsible for negotiating, interpreting, and accepting on behalf of the University agreements for projects for funding by federal and state agencies,
foundations, corporations, and other public and private sources. In addition, OSPA drafts, negotiates and executes sub-agreements under ISU's prime awards.
ISU receives about $360 million per year in sponsored funding for research, education and other programs. The University submits over 2,000 proposals each year,
including proposals to corporate sponsors. In addition to establishing awards for the various funded proposals, OSPA deals with master agreements, subcontract agreements, internal awards, and amendments or modifications to existing awards, such as extension
of project termination dates, budget modifications, etc.
The Director of OSPA has the responsibility for ensuring that all of the above submission and award activities are executed. By providing oversight, management,
and promotion of these activities, the Director supports and enables the research mission of the university. This position has a key role in the University's strategic plan initiative to significantly expand the level of extramural support for research, instruction
and service related activities.
The Director is expected to support the VPR's efforts to provide university-wide leadership in the development of strategies and initiatives to foster the growth
of sponsored programs. The Director will ensure that OSPA provides expert-level professional services related to sponsored programs administration. The Director is responsible for supervision, training, and professional development for approximately 15 staff.
The Director is expected to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. All staff members are expected to interact collegially and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethics.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and eight years of progressively responsible experience in research administration; or master's degree and six years of progressively responsible
experience in research administration. Experience must include supervision of professional staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a higher education setting
- Active Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification
- Experience negotiating funded project agreements
- Experience with government contracts
Salary:
Commensurate with qualifications
Special Conditions:
The Director serves at the pleasure of the Vice President for Research and the position is exempt from P&S policies.
