I guess the bigger question, Is there a work requirement for REUs? If so, then it is appropriate to pay the student through Payroll. If not, then it would not be appropriate to pay the student through Payroll. If there is no work requirement, then to me it should be considered Financial Aid. Therefore, REUs would be paid through Payroll if work related and through Financial Aid if non-work related. What is your understanding of how REUs should work?

We let the department decide how to pay REU stipends. If they choose non-payroll, they go thru Accounts Payable via stipend payment form.

Are there any universities that do not pay them as employees? If so, are they paid via Financial Aid or Accounts Payable?

We pay them through our HR office, which is in charge of paying all employees on grants.

Are the fellowships paid through Financial Aid or Accounts Payable?

Hello everyone,

I am curious how other schools pay undergrads on REU grants... do you pay them as wages or stipends subject to taxes or as fellowships not subject to taxes.

If anyone has an institutional policy regarding such payments, I would appreciate knowing what it is.

Thanks,
Bob Siegfried
