Wow! Tax the faculty member? We submit proposals to many organizations that provide no indirects. As long as the work (or research) to be supported is part of our mission, we go ahead. Whether the project is part of the mission might depend in part on the status of the faculty member (i.e. part time, tenure track, etc.) Hopefully what “is coming back to the university” is a strengthened faculty member (because of their research or service), goodwill from the community for the activity, etc.

I just can’t imagine making the faculty member pay out of pocket for the project. I do think it is reasonable to not approve a project with cost share.

Good luck!

Subject: [RESADM-L] "tax" on awards with no indirect costs

Hi Folks,

An interesting question came up. We had a part-time faculty asking to submit to an organization that would not provide the university with any indirect costs, and it was discussed and eventually not approved to go ahead. Someone suggested that in cases like these, maybe the university should go ahead with them, but tax the faculty member so that something is coming back to the university.

The question is, does anyone do that now? And if so, is it limited to certain people? Does the individual faculty pay the tax or is it assessed on the department or school?

Thanks!

Kris
