Its easy enough to submit from home from my laptop and I have clicked submit close to midnight on more than one occasion and remained awake to make sure there weren’t any g.g issues. I’ll either email or text the PI and they’re usually awake and will reply appreciatively. I typically sleep in and roll into work later in the morning.  We don’t have that many submissions and its worth staying up late and have faculty spread the word that we provide great customer service.

I’m not sure that this has ever come up as an issue.  My staff will stay late to complete a submission, but I would not ask anyone to do an 11:59 pm approval.  Our faculty is adapted to our normal workday hours and we handle submissions around that schedule.  At least we have until something like this comes up…

Subject: [RESADM-L] Electronic Proposal Submission Deadlines After Close of Business

After following the other thread regarding institutional policy on internal proposal deadlines, we were wondering how other institutions deal with electronic proposal deadlines that require electronic sign-off or submission by the sponsored research office and have a deadline after your normal close of business. For example, NASA NSPIRES has had proposal submission deadlines set at midnight. Other agencies have had late evening or even early morning submission deadlines.

Since most institutions will submit up to a deadline if everything is in order (subject to internal waivers, penalties, and all our other institutional threats, cajoling, and sledge hammers), how willing are you to accommodate submitting a proposal that is electronically due after close of business; and, will you ask your staff, or manage in some way, to electronically approve and submit (possibly at the last minute)?
