First, thank you to everyone who responded to my original inquiry on this. I have forwarded a number of ideas to my boss for consideration.
Charles, to your point – this is what we experienced with the previous aborted attempt that we had attempted to “automate” the process. Faculty had been preparing hard copy reports for years, but were resistant to inputting the data into a system. Part of the problem was poor communication – it appeared to be an additional responsibility for the faculty, when we were really trying to replace the formerly manual system. If it is going to work, the system has to collect what the faculty would normally need to provide in their annual reports.

Question: who is going to supply a system with data on faculty research interests, conference presentations, courses taught, and service?
We all know there are databases that can supply the grant and publication info. But is anyone really going to expect that faculty members will provide updates on the other stuff?
The faculty member will/should ask WHY it is important to do this. What will the answer be?

There are quite a number of commercial solutions available. For a good starting point, you might take a look at this wiki, put together a few years ago when Northwestern University was exploring its options:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Research_Networking_Tools_and_Research_Profiling_Systems
Holly Falk-Krzezinski, who was leading the project at Northwestern at the time, is now employed at Elsevier and works on their SciVal Experts platform. (Truth in advertising: I know Holly personally, through our joint activity in the National Organization of Research Development Professionals.) SI is currently evaluating its options, and I’m head of the ad hoc working group that’s gearing up to make a recommendation to our administration. Feel free to email me off-list if you have questions.

Subject: [RESADM-L] university wide reporting of faculty scholarly activity
We need to meet to get a campus-wide database online for use to identify “experts” and to generate reports for faculty and staff annual activity. We are looking for tool that would help us to collect, compile and analyze:
1. Faculty and staff need to upload all grants/contracts sought and procured
2. Projects and interests should be updated regularly
3. Conference presentations and posters
4. Teaching both past and present
5. Professional and university service
6. Publications, journal articles, chapters, books, etc.
What do your institutions use for this purpose? Are there commercial services/software available to do this?
Thanks! Wayne
