University-Industry Contracting “How-To” Webinar Series
Next Webinar: Confidential Disclosure Agreements
Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 1:00 pm EDT
The UIDP University-Industry Contracting "How-To" webinars series continues on Tuesday, November 13, at 1:00 PM ET with a discussion of Confidential Disclosure Agreements (CDAs).
Industry and Academia typically have very different perspectives on the disclosure and sharing of information with individuals and organizations. Industry often needs to maintain the secrecy of certain information in order to generate market value and be profitable, whereas the ability to publish and share information is critically important to a university’s research mission. If the parties decide to work together, it is essential to clarify and address each party’s expectations - short term and long term - by putting a confidential disclosure agreement in place.
Both speakers for this webinar - Bill Catlett, Director at the Office of Industry Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin, and Johannes Dapprich, Research Director at Generation Biotech - have extensive experience from “both sides of the aisle” with university / industry relations, research alliances and tech transfer issues. Bill’s office is responsible for facilitating strategic research alliances with industrial sponsors who are interested in technologies of UT Austin’s various schools and colleges, and developing appropriate models for Intellectual Property positions resulting from such research. UT Austin is one of the most highly rated public research universities in the United States and its research efforts consistently yield discoveries in emerging areas of science. Johannes is founder of a small business that has commercialized technology for selective DNA capture and complex genome analysis through collaborative work with GenoVision / Qiagen and Princeton, Rider and Rutgers Universities and the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia. He also serves as the UIDP manager for the contract accords project.
A CDA typically precedes other agreements (e.g., sponsored research, membership, licensing), but not all interactions between industry and university require a CDA. It often makes sense to utilize a step-wise approach in managing confidentiality when considering and setting up a potential collaboration and specific strategies will be covered during the webinar.
