Here is the text of an email I send to our new PI/PD’s , so they will know what to expect of me.

Funding Alerts

Search - I spend approximately 50% of my time searching for and disseminating funding alerts, and I search almost every day.

Every day I check out the Federal Register Today site.

I check the BOLO Items - this is a list of specific opportunities PI’s have asked me to be on the lookout for.

I check Emails.  I have signed up for a variety of regular alert emails, mostly from funders, but also from services that do these sorts of searches for a fee.  All of these emails come to a dedicated email inbox that I have access to and check on a daily basis.

I check RSS Feeds.  I have a list of 64 sources of RSS feeds that I check daily.  Most of these are particular funders like the Ford and Gates Foundations, and some are federal sites, like grants.gov and fedbizopps, but a few are organizations that specialize in specific topics, like the Open Society Institute and the Global Fund.  Still others are services, like the Federal and Foundation Assistance Monitor and the Community of Science website.

I check ‘Favorite’ Websites.  I have a list of 106 “favorite” websites that I visit on a regular basis.  These are foundations, cities and counties, federal, international and special interest organizations.

I store what I find that might be of interest to any of our 500+ PI’s and PD’s in a special RFP database, coding them for interest by the funding alert categories you have expressed interest in.  Then I share these with the PI/PD community in emails, according to your interests.

Every three to four months, I send out reminder emails with information on opportunities that have recurring deadlines, mostly federal, but some large foundations also have recurring deadlines for their funding opportunities.

I am always open to new suggestions for places to look.  If anyone ever has any questions about specific opportunities or suggestions about new places to look, I am happy to hear them.

Subject: Re: [RESADM-L] Dissemenation of Funding Opportunities

Hi Emily,

Our dissemination model is based on targeting specific funding opportunities to faculty based on our in-depth knowledge their interests and experience.  We do searches for faculty, as well as setting them up with alerts and facilitating their own use of our databases.

We use the Illinois Researcher Information Service (IRIS) (which offers an alert service), GrantsSearch (which does not), the Foundation Directory, and In4Grants, as well as free systems like grants.gov, and especially agency web sites for more detailed information.

Dear Colleagues,

I would be interested in some best practices in use for disseminating funding opportunities to the faculty on your campus. What alerts do you subscribe to? How do you organize them? What is the method of delivery that has the most impact? Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks again,
Emily
