Hello Tom,

At Arizona State University, post-docs hired at 50% FTE or greater are provided the following benefits:

·         VACATION HOURS

Postdoctoral Scholars With a fiscal appointment, accrue 10 vacation days in the first year of service (employment) and 15 days in subsequent years. Unused accrued hours may not be carried over from one calendar year to the next nor are they paid out at separation.  Postdoctoral Scholars with an academic appointment do not accrue vacation.

·         SICK HOURS

All Postdoctoral Scholars accrue sick hours at 3.69 hours per pay period.

·         RETIREMENT

Postdoctoral Scholars are not eligible to participate in a retirement plan.

·         LONG-TERM DISABILITY

Coverage is provided by the State with Standard Insurance Co.

For FY 2012, our fringe benefits rate for a post-doc is 40%.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Subject: [RESADM-L] Postdoc fringe benefits and costs

I am curious how other institutions handle benefits offered to their postdocs and how those benefits are paid. We currently offer full health care benefits to our postdocs, which can get quite expensive. Although they are not allowed to participate in our state retirement system, the costs associated with their benefits are typically charged to grants, along with their salaries. Our PIs have been expressing increased frustration with supporting these costs from scarce research dollars. We are interested in considering other models if they are out there.
