Hi Barbara,
We don’t compensate our nonaffiliated IRB or IACUC members. The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) has guidance on this topic (see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/faqs.htm#b11) that might be helpful to you. The text follows.
May the institution pay or reimburse expenses incurred by nonaffiliated members?
Nominal compensation for service on the IACUC, or reimbursement for expenses such as parking and travel costs, is generally not viewed as jeopardizing the nonaffiliated status of a member. Any compensation for participation should not be so substantial as to influence voting or reflect an important source of income. It is acceptable for the institution pay for IACUC training of nonaffiliated members (e.g., attendance at IACUC 101). [A1]
Steve

Subject: [RESADM-L] Support for IRB and IACUC Community Members
What kinds of support does your institution provide to community members who serve on your IRB and or IACUC…things like reimbursement for paper and toner cartridges, use of university laptop, paying for home internet connection or even gifts (from private funds, of course) and at approximately what annual dollar amount? We want to do something for these wonderful volunteers and are looking for ideas and norms. Thanks!
Barbara
IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Office of Sponsored Programs & Research Administration has moved to the new Psychology building (between Nevins and Hopper Halls).
