Our institution normally does not allow individual memberships as a direct cost on sponsored accounts. However, we have had a few situations where the membership is a requirement for presenting data at conferences held by the organization and/or there is a significant savings to the sponsor by becoming a member and in these cases we've allowed it.

I just want to may sure I understand this. If the non-member registration is $650,  the member registration is $400, and the membership fee is $150 the rules state that you can't save the sponsor $100 by registering the attendee because membership fee is not allocable. I've seen registrations for events where the higher non member fee includes registration, would that be allowed?   I'm thinking having heard the responses in this thread it may be why they've started making these offers.

I have a PI who is going to a conference and wants to pay for an individual membership to get the lower conference rate.  I thought that individual memberships are unallowable under A21 but I can't find the reference.  This is what was listed:

33. Memberships, subscriptions and professional activity costs.

  1. Costs of the institution’s membership in business, technical, and professional organizations are allowable.

  2. Costs of the institution’s subscriptions to business, professional, and technical periodicals are allowable.

  3. Costs of membership in any civic or community organization are unallowable.

  4. Costs of membership in any country club or social or dining club or organization are unallowable.

Does anyone know where I can find the specific reference regarding individual memberships?

Thanks for your help!

On February 1st, MCG became Georgia Health Sciences University. My email address has also changed to the format "@georgiahealth.edu". Please update your address book to reflect this change.
