POSITION:

 

Vice President, Research & Operations

 

SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

        The Vice President, Research & Operations reports to the President of The Research Institute and is responsible for day-to-day scientific operations at The Research Institute.  This position ensures that research facilities and scientific operations efficiently support the faculty scientists and their scientific pursuits. The position has overall responsibility for technology commercialization, facility planning, all core laboratory services, laboratory animal facility, and research education.

 

        Specific Responsibilities:

 

·         Operations:  Develops, establishes, and directs execution of operating policies to support overall research goals and objectives.  Oversees all research service functions, including core laboratory services, vivarium, technology commercialization, and research education.  Implements programs to ensure attainment of The Research Institute strategic plan.   Provides direction and structure to research operating units to improve processes and management to generate workflow optimization.  Directs opportunities for integration of research programs into hospital operations where appropriate.

 

·         Facilities:  Responsible for maintaining all on-site and off-site research facilities and equipment.  Consults daily with Director of Research Facilities.  Directs new research construction and renovation, assuring representative user input.  Manages disruptions caused by ongoing research construction in and around the hospital’s campus.

 

·         Regulatory Affairs:  Serves as institutional official for laboratory animal program. Responsible for institutional compliance with lab animal regulatory requirements including IACUC, USDA, OLAW, AAALC, and OSHA.  Serves as institutional official for NIH loan repayment program.  Serves on radiation safety committee.

 

·         Strategic Planning: Leads short-term and long-range planning to support strategic facilities goals.  Participates in The Research Institute’s quarterly board meetings. Provides input into business development decisions, including management of intellectual property.

 

·         Financial Management:  Directs scientific operations to meet budget and other financial goals. Authorizes commitment of resources in grant applications and contracts. Approves all expenditures over $5K, all travel, all employee reimbursements and access to residual funds.

 

·         Human Resources Management:  Oversees salary issues and requests for additional faculty.  Assures compliance with the human resources policies of The Research Institute.

 

·         Signatory Authority: For all grant applications, reviews space, equipment and percent-effort commitments.

 

·         Technology Commercialization:  Advises technology commercialization office on management of intellectual property.

 

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

 

·         The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years experience; five in an executive level management position within a research institution, academic unit, biotech Company, a renowned hospital or healthcare institution.
