I agree with you, Paula.  I had a proposal come through requesting to purchase iPads and although it was submitted (with a HUGE amount of detail about how they would be used to benefit the project) I think it will be difficult for the sponsor to see this as an allocable expense.  I think it would be even more difficult to justify this as an allocable purchase on an existing award when it wasn’t originally proposed.

Our institution doesn’t have a policy about iPads in particular, but we have very strict guidelines regarding any type of computer equipment, especially for faculty (purchasing computers for faculty on grants is usually not allowed) and for staff that are not 100% funded on a project. It would too easy for a product like an iPad to have a multi-purpose not directly related to a specific grant. Unless you can document that the product is a) needed on the project (why wouldn’t a computer or traditional lap-top work just as well and be less expensive?) and b) will only be used for that project, it would really not be appropriate to purchase it with grant funds. It’s all about being good stewards of tax-payer funding.

We are starting to receive requests to purchase iPads on some of our grants.  Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?  If so, do you have any policy/procedure put in to place to handle these new requests.

Any thoughts/comments are appreciated!
