Thanks for the replies everyone.  I appreciate the ‘confirmation’ – we already worked up the mileage at 50 cents/mile to come in cheaper by about 40 bucks vs. the cheapest airfare we found – so we’re good to go.

Jimmy – I’m a Camry man these days, but I have enjoyed several Government Motors products (one Chevy, one Buick, and even one Oldsmobile – OLDSMOBILE!!! am I dating myself?) in the past – you remember?  Back in the day when they were known as General Motors?  ;)

Thanks again all,

James

.50 per mile for 2010 per IRS.

It is allowable. But is it reasonable? probably. Should not be that much of a difference.

 Chevys are safer than Toyotas.

Subject: [RESADM-L] Car vs. Airfare for travel

Good morning esteemed colleagues, Happy Wednesday!

I have a PI that will be traveling on a federal grant to DC soon.  She wishes to drive instead of flying.  This is a new one by me, but I assume it would be allowable – wouldn’t we just reimburse her mileage at a federal approved rate?  I have the feeling the cost is going to be comparable to airfare.  If so, does anyone know the current rate?

Finally, are we bound by anything like a DriveAmerica Act that would require her to take a Chevy instead of her Toyota?  ;)

Have a great day,

James
