I think they’re just giving you some key points to remember about the R&R budget in this case, that a) you should only use the period 1 sheet and b) that the direct costs cannot exceed $300K for this announcement.

Happy Friday, all.

Big thanks to the folks who responded to my question, I appreciate it.  I was right there with you guys in thinking that “R&R budget = detailed budget” until I got to these instructions in Section 6 of the RFA:

6. Other Submission Requirements and Information

PHS 398 MODULAR or DETAILED BUDGET COMPONENT, PERIOD 1 - In this component, complete only Budget

Period 1. Include in budget period 1 the total requested budget for all years of the proposed project. Use the modular

budget for direct cost amounts up to $250,000 and the detailed budget for direct costs amounts above $250,000.

[snip]

Detailed Budget above $250,000 to $300,000

Budget Period 1: Direct Costs

·          Direct Costs less Consortium F&A: This number may NOT EXCEED $300,000.

·          Consortium F&A. If applicable, enter the actual consortium F&A (e.g., $3,271).

Budget Period 1: Section B - Indirect Costs:

·           If the F&A rate agreement has been established, indicate the type of agreement and the date. All

appropriate exclusions must be applied in the calculation of the F&A costs.

·          If the F&A rate has not been established, enter “None-will negotiate” and include information for

a proposed rate. Use the budget justification if additional space is needed.

These look like modular budget instructions, and not R&R instructions. Snafu on NIH’s part?  Or am I still just not getting it?  Should I just disregard and just fill out the R&R budget as normal?  Any additional thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Jennifer

"Detailed" and "Research and Related Budget" are the same thing.  Don't use the 398.

If PI wants over $250, regardless of number of years, do NOT use modular.

[IMHO...this use of single year budget for multiple years is crazy]

Hello.

I’m helping a PI prepare an application for the NIH ARRA AREA opportunity ( RFA-OD-09-007) and I’m a little confused about which budget form to use when proposing direct costs between $250K and $300K.

In some places, the RFA mentions the Research & Related Budget form, but elsewhere it mentions a “detailed budget” (I’m assuming this means the PHS398 Detailed Budget for Initial Budget Period form).

The Grants.gov application for this opportunity has the Research & Related budget form in it, so I’m guessing that’s what I need to use since the PI is proposing $300K direct costs.  But the reference to the “detailed budget” in the RFA is giving me pause.

Am I missing something?  Entirely possible!  If anyone in RESADM-L-land could shed some light or provide additional clarification on this issue, I’d be most grateful.

Thanks!
Jennifer
