On a related subject, but different topic, what software do you use to conduct your on-line classes?  I have an association that is going to be doing recorded webinars and asynchronous classes.  I’ve heard of Blackboard and WebCT.  What others are out there?  Any recommendations (good or bad)?

Is this between the professor and the school in Japan, or the school in Japan and your school, with the professor doing the work?

If it is his own deal, then it is up to him, but then he should not be using university resources.

If it is with the university, then the contract should be with the university and copyright issues, depending on the material that he is using, may apply.  As routine, we would run it by our import export control office for the green light as well.  Most of the time use would be restricted to that particular class and supporting work.  It would not be used to conduct other classes without the professor.  You can always amend the contract.

A professor here is negotiating a contract with a school district in Japan to provide them with  a series of on-line Western Civ  coursework – not for university credit.  The school district wants us to allow them continued access to the recorded lessons after their school year (and the contract period) ends – either by continued access to the recordings or by copying them to CD.

Currently, there is nothing in the contract stating they cannot copy the coursework and use it after the contract period.  I would like to hear your thoughts regarding this.  How have you handled similar situations?
