It has been a while, but I am ready to re-visit the activity that we discussed earlier, the community/economic development initiative, to see if there is an interface with your interests/expertise.

A few people on my staff have put together this piece to describe the project:
-------------------------

As the U.S. undertakes an economic recovery, there are two cultural and political realities that influence every approach: higher education's contribution of ideas and innovative market solutions are expected to provide the indispensable foundation for economic health; and local and community-based solutions are more viable and important than national or one-size-fits-all answers to our common challenges.  But the capabilities of higher education to serve as the economic engine for the recovery are inadequate at present. Comprehensive training and regional networking activities aimed at the transfer of innovative ideas to community practices, assessments of community/institutional needs and capabilities, applied research strategies, education/community outreach structures, faculty development approaches, federal compliance training, and essential ethical standards are needed to realize these economic health and job creation goals.  The proof of this approach will be shown in quantifiable measures of job creation and community/economic health in each region of the country.

-------------------------

And this is an APLU activity that would be a collaborative element:

-------------------------------

GRC staff members have been working with APLU staff for the last seven months to cooperate in their Commission on Competitiveness, Innovation and Economic Prosperity (CICEP).  The leadership for the initiative has come from Arizona State University (GRC member) President Michael Crow. CICEP seeks to provide the following: examples of successful gap funding in support of technology transfer; best practices in faculty and institutional development to stimulate entrepreneurship and economic opportunities; approaches to measuring the regional economic impact of universities; metrics to assess the innovation environment on the campus; and effective administrative approaches to the management of intellectual property.  AASCU and GRC institutions have much to offer and gain from this collaboration.

----------------------------

If you are interested, we plan on having a taskforce meeting sometime late June, and I would welcome it if you wanted to listen in to get a better idea of what we are trying to accomplish.

Sorry guys, did it again. You would think I would have learned how to use a listserv by now! Please disregard this off line notice. Thanks. Dick

Hi Mary Kate,

I don't know of any institution using PeopleSoft to develop and transmit proposals on an S2S basis via G.g., but I would be interested if you find any. After retiring from R..I. College as Director of the Office of Research and Grants Administration, I spent a couple of years helping InfoEd clients implement their modules, so I obtained a good feel for the proposal development/submission/tracking software institutions were using. As you know working with Adobe has proved more frustrating than most of us hoped when the shift from PureEdge was announced a few years back. S2S has proved far more satisfactory both from an institutional and agency perspective (especially NIH). The S2S systems that appear to be working well are those developed by InfoEd, COEUS, Cayuse, and Click Commerce. Frankly, I am not sure PeopleSoft ever devoted the kind of effort and resources that were needed to make their grant module really top notch, but that is a personal opinion.

I am no longer with InfoEd (although relations remain very cordial) as I moved more into a retirement mode. However, I still provide service on a limited basis if a project interests me or if I feel some "allegience". If you ever need a bit of ad hoc help let me know. I am across the bay and I wanted you to know of my continued activity in the profession, however limited. I am not sure how many "stimulus" proposals URI has submitted, but some institutions will get "hit" with extra work. NCURA has asked some of us "emeritus" guys if we would consider being put on a forthcoming list of senior folks who might be willing to help those institutions on a temporary basis. I will be on that list when it is distributed. Unfortunately, I suspect there will be extra work, but not extra money available to help support the additional adminstrative costs. However, a few schools have added some direct costs into the budgets of stimulus proposals in anticipation of this need. This practice normally is not allowed, as you know, but I hear agency grants officers may take a more lenient view for "stimulus" awards.

In any event, I trust all across the bay desptie what I am sure is an excessive workload. Dick

Hi,

I’m wondering if anyone is using PeopleSoft’s capacity as a S2S grant development tool.  If you could contact me directly that would be appreciated.

Thanks,
