When showing support for a proposal, an institution does not have
to state that there is a separate space which is available only to the PI.
I have submitted a number of proposals for junior PIs in the
same situation, and what I focused on was that; yes, it was shared lab space, but
what was most important was what the institution DID have available to the
person writing the proposal, namely: access to specific scientific equipment,
appropriate storage (freezer/dry/chemical), approximate amount of space in the
said lab that could be used for this work, and other physical assets available to
the scientist.
Show that the space is shared – but also show why that
shared element is an asset in itself.

Subject: [RESADM-L] Research space for new investigator for new RO1
submission
We have a new investigator
writing her first RO1.
Does she need
Institutional Designation of space that is soley belonging to her - a room, for
example.
She currently has
laboratory space in a larger laboratory but not her own room.
The institution is
reluctant to provide a support letter because there is not going to be
additional space assigned to this new investigator.
So what kind of
Space Support is needed for a new investigator.
THANKS in advance
