I thought I would ask this seasoned group for help.  I thought I understood this but something came up that is making me question things.

Our faculty are on acad yr contracts (9 month appts) with the opportunity to receive summer salary through external funding, teaching etc.  The salary calculation seems pretty straightforward for sponsors that require effort breakout between summer and acad yr (e.g., NSF and NIH).  Summer = 3/9ths for base  Acad yr = 9/9ths for base

I’m getting confused when I have sponsors that don’t ask for the breakout.  For example, I have a PI that will be putting in 10% effort over 12 months.  Do I take the 10% against the 9 month base or do I annualize the 9 month base (1/9th * 12) and then take the 10% to get the salary amt? What do you do when the effort isn’t even throughout the year and the sponsor wants an overall % for the 12 month period (e.g., 10% during the acad yr, 100% during the summer months)?

Sorry, I know this question might be pretty elementary for many of you.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
