Our institution basically leaves this decision up to the PI.  In the past, one PI that I worked for allowed the purchase of laptop computers by trainees appointed on the training grant with the understanding that the laptop was the property of the institution and more specifically the training program.  Therefore, when that trainee was terminated from the training grant, the laptop was available for another trainee's use or for use by the training program in general (for presentations made by trainees or  mentors).  Thankfully this didn't happen often as most of our trainees already had laptops when they entered the training program.

Subject: [RESADM-L] computer purchases on a training grant

I am looking for a general consensus from all of you experts out there…

How do you handle a request to purchase a desktop computer or laptop computer for trainees on a training grant?  A21 restrictions still apply, however, the argument is because of the nature of a training grant this should be allowed.

How does your University’s handle this?
