Peter, some interesting FAQs re: perchloric acid are at http://www.gfschemicals.com/technicallibrary/Questions-About-Perchloric-Acid.asp#13.  I believe this is a chemical company's site.

Subject: [RESADM-L] Safety question: perchloric acid

Can someone help me with this question:

If percholoric acid is used in fume hoods it can become a safety hazard because it can crystallize in the duct work, and the crystals are explosive; if the ductwork is removed or replaced, the crystals can cause an explosion.

Is the statement above true of perchloric acid used in laboratory quantities, or does it rather become a hazard in industrial settings, where a hood is used almost exclusively for work with perchloric acid?

If laboratory quantities pose a hazard, how long does the hazard persist after  the hood is no longer used?

Thanks.
