The Office of the Vice President
for Research and Graduate Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas
seeks a director to manage the Office of Technology Transfer. This
is a full-time position with benefits reporting to the Executive Director
of Research Compliance.
Responsibilities: The
successful candidate will lead an intellectual property (IP) and commercialization
program for the university by developing strategies and action plans for
working with intellectual property disclosed by UNLV faculty, staff, and
students and providing consultation on patent and copyright procedures,
licensing, venture capital, seed investment, business incubation, planning
and start-up, and related topics dealing with entrepreneurial activity
and economic development and diversification. Working closely with
UNLV general counsel, this individual will actively protect and commercialize
technology for the benefit of the university and the citizens of Nevada;
serve as a liaison between university researchers and off-campus commercial
interests; ensure appropriate support is provided to researchers to facilitate
regulatory compliance; serve as a key resource and consultant for the university
community on IP and commercialization; recommend internal IP/tech transfer
policies; develop, conduct, and maintain an effective education and training
program; and gather, maintain and report data and information related to
IP/commercialization efforts.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
MBA, JD, or master’s degree in any related field from an accredited
college or university is required. A minimum of 5 years related professional
experience is required, which includes demonstrated knowledge, expertise
and technical competence in a broad range of intellectual property and
commercialization issues; experience addressing technology transfer in
a complex environment; and demonstrated experience as an effective manager.
Preferred Qualifications:
Both MBA and JD degrees. Extensive IP/commercialization experience
in a higher education setting.

Ability to build and sustain collaborative
relationships among diverse groups of administrators, faculty, and staff;
ability to work independently, prioritize and manage multiple projects
concurrently, and meet deadlines; ability to operate a technology transfer
office and prioritize patent opportunities within the finite budget constraints
of a public institution; strong analytical, communication, organizational
and record-keeping skills; ability to communicate effectively in oral presentations
and in writing; experience facilitating meetings and discussions in a complex
university environment; ability to exhibit a professional manner in dealing
with others and to maintain constructive working relationships at all levels
of organizations.
